75 Year Old Hears Gospel for the First Time

April 9, 2012

Jesus is Risen! Sunday we celebrated Jesus rising from the grave. As I pondered on the sacrifice that Jesus made for us I couldn’t help but have a burning desire to want to share the salvation story with someone on this Resurrection Sunday. Normally we go to church at Calvary Petaluma, but by a turn of events we ended up going to our old church Calvary Fellowship of Rohnert Park. Before church, they had a wonderful pancake breakfast. This church meets at the Senior Center and they had invited the residents in the Senior Home across the street to join them for the Pancake breakfast and then church afterwards. There were 7 or 8 residents that came and they all sat at a table together. I went over and introduced myself and started talking to them about Jesus. I had a great conversation with one of the ladies. She is a believer and I was able to pray for her after our conversation. Then I turned to her friend across the table and asked her if she was a believer. She said she was, but something told me that she wasn’t quite sure. I asked if she were to die today, if we she would go to heaven and she said yes. I then asked, why, and she said because she was a good person. I then started to share verses with her such as Romans 3:23 and Psalm 14:3. I shared the law of God with her and she started to realize that she was not in fact a good person in the eyes of God and she would have to stand before Him one day and give an account for all she has said and done and thought. I then had the awesome privilege to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with her. As I was explaining the free gift that is before us because of the sacrifice that He made, she looked at me and said, “I have never heard these things before.” I was shocked. Across the table from me sat a 75 year old woman who had never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ all the while thinking she was a good person and that her goodness would get her into heaven. It reminded me of who I was before Jesus got ahold of my heart and the countless other people I have talked to over the years. I was so excited that this elderly woman wanted to give her life to Jesus, but saddened over the fact that no one had ever told her she was in need of a Savior. God is so faithful, even when we aren’t. This witnessing encounter made me realize even more, how we as Christians, need to be bold and courageous, and not cower beneath fear in sharing our faith. God, help me to honor you by fulfilling Your Great Commission. Daily give me opportunities to share Your Gospel with someone who is lost.
